What is K-POP?

K-pop is a musical genre based in South Korea. K-pop means “Korean Pop”.

Seo Taiji and Boys

In 1940 Korean musicians started promoting their cultural music. But in 1992 a new modern form of the genre was formed by the most popular band of the time called, Seo Taiji and Boys, which bought with them different styles and genres of music. As a result, they played a big role in representing South Korean culture and modernizing South Korea's music.

K-pop industry started flourishing when different entertainment companies came into being and they started forming different boy and girl groups. These groups need to sign a contract with their company, train under their companies, and debut under these companies. There are four big entertainment companies in K-pop industry like; SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and Big Hit Entertainment. All famous boy and girl groups mostly belong to these four companies. 

TVXQ

K-pop started spreading out of South Korea, when in 2003 TVXQ and BoA started a new generation of K-pop idols, which popularize K-pop worldwide TVXQ is a boy band formed by SM Entertainment in 2003, consisting of five members. 

This group started promoting K-pop music in their neighboring countries like Japan and China.

BoA

BoA is a solo artist, debuted under SM Entertainment. She is extremely popular in South Korea for her amazing voice. She is known as the “Queen of K-pop”. She is one of the most successful and influential singers in the history of K-pop. 

With the development of the Social Networking Services, K-dramas and K-pop music simultaneously spread through the countries of East Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, North Africa, Southern Africa, and the Middle East.   

Psy

Psy is a South Korean solo idol and he debuted under YG Entertainment. Moreover, Psy played a vital role in modernizing the K-pop culture, when his most popular music video “Gangnam Style” became the first K-pop music video to reach more than a billion Youtube views in December 2012.

Big Bang

From 2012 a new Korean Wave started and it brought a more modern band of boys and girls as well. 
Out of them were the famous Boy Bands of that time Big Bang and EXO. 
Big Bang is a boy band of five members and this band is mostly popular because of their rapping style and extremely unique music videos.

This boy band bought even more popularity with them and attract millions of fans from all around the world. 

EXO

EXO is a boy band of nine members and this band debuted under SM Entertainment in 2012.Their unique music videos, fantastic choreography, and amazing fashion won the hearts of million numbers of fans.

This band is mostly known for their hit songs like; Growl, Monster, Call me baby and Love shot. This band is also famous for being the most “Grand Prize” awards winner in South Korean awards.    



This band has captured the hearts of millions of fans and even inspired their junior Boy Bands in the K-pop industry. 

Girl's Generation

While on the girl's side were the unbeatable Girl's Generation and 2ne1.
Girl's Generation is a girl group formed by SM Entertainment. 
While 2ne1 is a girl group formed by YG Entertainment.
In South Korea, the girl groups are not only cute while performing, but they are also really impressive in their singing, dancing.

Along with that, these groups are also a  big inspiration to the girl groups of today. 
These idols played a big role in advancing the K-pop genre and style and advertise their music throughout the globe, by organizing concerts not only in South Korea but also in international countries.

Wait... I am not talking about the word BTS (Behind the Scene).
Well, guys, I am talking about the K-pop Boy Band BTS.

Some of you might know about them and some of you might not aware of them. But let me tell you, they are currently the most popular band in the world. From 2015 till now there are continuously promoting K-pop music all around the globe. They have smashed Youtube with their amazing music videos. They have played a huge part in promoting K-pop music in America. The group has won Top Social Artist three years in a row at Billboard Music Awards.

Alongside BTS, there are many other boy groups, which are non-stop promoting K-pop all around the globe. They all are extremely talented in singing, dancing, and rapping as well. They all have their unique style and taste of music but all together they all are spreading K-pop music worldwide. K-pop Boy Bands like; BTS, EXO, GOT7, NCT, Stray Kids, Ikon, Winner, and Monsta x are well recognized worldwide and they have millions of followers all around the globe. 

  

Most Popular Girl Band 2019

BlackPink

Well in the girl’s category, BlackPink is getting the attention of viewers from all around the world. They are also promoting K-pop culture in America and globally as well. They are receiving an immense number of views on Youtube because of their unique music videos. In November 2019, their hit mv "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" surpassed one billion views on Youtube.

BlackPink also became the owner of the highest number of subscribers on Youtube after surpassing One Direction.

TWICE

Moreover, girls group TWICE is also known for their eye-catching and cute music videos. They mostly promote their music in their neighbor country Japan.  

There are many other girl groups, which have a huge fan following from all around the world. Some of them like; Red Velvet, Mamamoo, Itzy, (G)I-DLE, and G-Friend. These groups are highly talented in their work and all of them are really liked by their fans. 

K-pop is not only advertising their national language “Korean / Hangul” but they are also promoting their fashion, cosmetics, and brands. K-pop groups are well managed, well mannered, and unique from each other and they are most probably differing by their “Fandom Names” and “Light Sticks”. Moreover, K-pop idols are also diverse in culture, and right now in K-pop industries include idols from China, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand.
